Miss Tiffany's Universe 2016 candidates show off their bodies in swimwear round

Parading around in skimpy, sequinned bikinis with their hair perfectly coiffed and make-up carefully finished, these are this year's candidates of the world's most popular transgender beauty pageant.

With around 100 women applying from across Thailand, the Miss Tiffany's Universe event is more competitive than ever before and sees dozens of transgender women battle it out for the highly sought-after winner's crown.

The competition, which started in 1998 and has run annually since 2004, is broadcast live on Thai television, with the latest round seeing the contestants walk the catwalk in skimpy swimwear in Bangkok.

Applicants to the pageant must be Thai transgender and aged between 18 and 25, although those under the age of 20 need parental permission to enter - not an easy task when many refuse to acknowledge their child's new identity.

Over the coming weeks, the contestants will battle out to become Miss Tiffany Universe - a title which comes with an impressive array of prizes, including 120,000 baht (£2,300) - more than the average salary in Thailand - and a car.

With the beauties all being born male before making the transition to women, organisers of the competition hope it will help breakdown the stigma many of Thailand's transgender community face on a daily basis.

'Society looks to us for a laugh,' last year's winner Sopida Siriwatananukul said previously. 'We're not a laughing stock or clowns. We are just people who want to make others happy.'

This year's competition began in March and will finish on May 8 in Pattaya Beach, 60 miles south-west of Bangkok.
